SHILLONG, JAN 28: The family of the late Partharkhmah officer-in-charge Pearly Joshua Marbaniang have rejected “suicide claim” of the police by saying that they refuse to accept that he had ‘shot-himself’ even as they claimed they were ‘never officially informed’ about his death and two of his mobiles have gone missing.
“We as family members will never accept that he could take such a drastic decision to end his life,” the family members told journalists. They said, “We know how he is and he could not do such a thing as he was very responsible towards his family, wife and kid.”
Sub-inspector Pearlystone Joshua Marbaniang, posted as officer-in-charge of Patharkhmah outpost in Ri Bhoi District, was found critically injured with a gunshot on his head in his official quarter on Saturday night.
Police claimed that Marbaniang had allegedly shot himself with his service revolver.
It is worth mentioning that Marbaniang had detained over 30 trucks which carried coal illegally to Assam via Mairang-Azara road hours before his death.
“Officially, nobody from the police department had informed us about the incident,” Marbaniang’s wife Chaleth Pyngrope said while informing on that fateful night her husband had called her twice.
Ironically, all family members claimed that they only came to know that he had shot himself from media reports where the Ri Bhoi district SP had claimed that as per post mortem report it appears to be a case of suicide.
Expressing shock and disbelieved about her husband death, Pyngrope said, “On Saturday night at 7.52 pm, my husband had called me. We had normal conversation and there was no sign that he was depressed,” adding “He (Marbaniang) did mention about too much of pressure workload and the pressure from all sides on him.”
“He also informed that he had detained around 32 coal trucks due to no proper papers,” Pyngrope said.
Stating that the second and last call from Marbaniang came at around 8.42 pm, Pyngrope said, “Till this time, we were talking normally and he was asking about how are things at home. Few minutes of our conversation, he suddenly told me that he needed to attend one emergency call. After 20 minutes or so, when I tried calling him, his phone was ringing but he never receives my calls anymore.”
Pyngrope further informed that it was only at around 12 am that they got a call from her relatives including former Meghalaya speaker Charles Pyngrope and his son David Nongrum, an MLA, informing that they have received information that Marbaniang had met with some accident and is in critical condition adding when they reach the hospital in Guwahati, they were informed that he was no more.
Marbaniang’s funeral service was conducted yesterday at his residence at Umpling Dongrum here in the city.
Pyngrope further informed that the police had return all her husband’s wallet having ATM card, EPIC card and the keys of his official quarter but failed to return his two mobile phones, the number from which he had contacted me (the numbers include – 8575655401 & 8134846334).
“Till now, we are yet to get his two phones,” Pyngrope said while reiterating that she will not accept that it was a case of suicide even as she said she wanted justice.
Meanwhile, it is said that even the certificates given to the family members by two hospitals which include one in Ri Bhoi and the other in Guwahati, which Marbaniang was admitted saya different stories altogether.-By Our Reporter
