SHILLONG, JAN 20: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma on Wednesday directed the Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department to take corrective measures on the issue related to the quality of water being supplied to the people.
“I have whispered to my colleague in this case, RC Laloo, who is Deputy Chief Minister incharge PHE, to take cognizance of this development and take measures to satisfy us because we all are using the same water,” Chief Minister Mukul Sangma told reporters after a cabinet meeting on Wednesday.
Stating that the government is concern about the health of the people, he said that he had even gone through the claim and counter claim following conflicting reports over the quality of water.
The direction came after there were reports alleging that the water supplied from the Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme (GSWSS) is acidic and not fit for human consumption. However, the PHE had recently rubbished the report claiming that the water is well within the permissible limit and in no case the department is supply acidic water to the people.
“Our intention is to ensure that whatever water we are providing for the people of the state must be potable, must not be something which will affect the health of the people adversely,” Sangma said.
He reiterated, “I have already talked to him (Laloo) and necessary measures to actually get the right information about what exactly is the quality of the water, should be furnish to the government.”
Meanwhile, the chief minister claimed that he had also given similar direction in the past considering the concerns expressed by the people in respect to the quality of water.
“I have shared the concern of the people on the matter because people who are visiting the state particularly the tourist in course of some interaction have actually spoken about the unlimited potentiality to attract tourist but they have also flag certain concern as visiting tourists and one of them happen to be the quality of the water,” he said.
He said this concerned has been passed to authorities concern and again he has asked Laloo today to see that all corrective measure be taken rather than trying to shield from any kind of responsibility. He said that the department must ensure that the water supplied to the people must not affect their health.-By Our Reporter
