TURA MAR 21: Veteran politician and National People’s Party (NPP) candidate Purno Agitok Sangma and Congress nominee and political greenhorn Daryl William Momin filed their nomination papers for the Tura Lok Sabha seat with the Returning Officer on Friday. Elections to the two Meghalaya parliamentary seats- Shillong and Tura- will be held on April 9.
Momin was accompanied by Meghalaya youth affairs minister Zenith Sangma, parliamentary secretary Noverfield Marak besides MLAs, MDCs and his supporters .
The former Lok Sabha speaker Purno Agitok Sangma on the other hand was accompanied by his daughter Agatha K. Sangma, his legislator son James K. Sangma, Tura South MLA John Leslee K Sangma and other party functionaries.
Momin filed his nomination at 12 noon and Purno at 2 pm. A debutant in politics, Momin, 27, is an MBA from Bond University in Australia.
Momin was received outside the Returning Officer office by his supporters, who shouted slogans praising for his victory. Momin sounded very confident as he said, “I am not at all sacred to take on Purno Sangma”.
Momin said his “youth” is his strength and an attribute to represent the people as he flashed the “V” sign before his supporters.
On the other hand Purno Sangma looked cheerful as ever flashing his trademark smile even as he was garlanded by his supporters. Sitting in his wheelchair he said, “I am confident that Garo hills will vote to free India from the Congress rule.”
Tura Lok Sabha seat will see a one on one fight between the veteran politician Sangma and a political greenhorn Momin.
The last date for filing of nomination papers is till Saturday up to 3 pm. Scrutiny will be held on Monday and the last date of withdrawal of candidature is March 26.– By Our Correspondent
