SHILLONG, JAN 19: Meghalaya government on Tuesday expressed its keen interest to set up an Inspection & Certification (I&C) Center for testing the fitness of all on-road vehicles in the state. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has proposed setting up of the centre in the state at a cost of Rs 14.4 crore, state transport minister HDR Lyngdoh told reporters.
Lyngdoh said, “We have been informed on the need to set up the centre in the state and we are keen in setting it up in the state capital to cater to at least six districts initially.” According to him, with the setting up of the centre, testing of fitness of all on-road vehicles will be done at the center.
Lyngdoh also added, “This is for road safety and also inspection of the emission parameters.” He sid the government is in the process of identifying 3 acre land required for the purpose.
Lyngdoh informed that he will also go for inspection to the ongoing projects at Haryana and Delhi on February 2 and 3.
Meanwhile, in the absence of such center, only manual and visual inspection is being carried out at present by the respective district transport offices (DTOs) of the state.
According to transport commissioner Israel Ingty, the steps taken by the government so far towards this end is that the pollution testing stations have been reactivated in the petrol pumps in the state.-By Our Reporter
