SHILLONG, MAY 15: The Grand Council of Chiefs of Meghalaya urged the state government to make use of media as a medium to caution citizen about weather developments following frequent cyclonic incidents. “Television channels, FM radio and newspapers should be use to caution citizen about weather developments in the state to prevent wanton damage by frequent storms and cyclones,” the grand council of chief chairman John F Kharshiing said in a letter to chief minister Mukul Sangma on Wednesday.
Kharshiing said, “With the availability of high technology, the state government should setup a weather watch mechanism to be monitored by senior official at the district and sub-divisional level, to enable them to make appropriate decisions and caution the citizens accordingly.”
Meanwhile, north east India may have to face heavy rainfall and thunderstorm in next couple of hours because of tropical Cyclone Mahasen.
The NE could reel under heavy thunder squalls and Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are expected to be hit.
As per the Indian Meteorological Department, heavy rain is expected in the northeast over the next three days.
The region could also face heavy winds measuring from 65-75km per hour that could gust to 85kmph.
On May 17, heavy winds measuring 50-60kmph gusting to 70kmph are also expected.
The cyclonic storm over the south-east Bay of Bengal moved northwards and lay centered near latitude 13.50 N and longitude 85.50 E, about 760km south.- By Our Reporter
