SHILLONG, MAY 5: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Langkynma unit on Thursday demanded that the state government consider upgrading the Nonghyllam Health Sub-Centre to a PHC, in the interest of people residing along the Indo-Bangla border.
“We demand that the Nonghyllam sub-centre be immediately upgraded to the level of primary health centre (PHC) within a reasonable time not exceeding three months,” KSU-LU president Pius Marwein said in a memorandum submitted to health minister AL Hek on Thursday.
He said over thirty villages including Nonghyllam, Nongjri, Kulang, Umsur, Borsora and Rajaju had witnessed rapid population growth rendering the sub-center incapacitated to provide adequate health care service to the people.
Nonghyllam is located in one of the most under-developed border areas of South West Khasi Hills district and it is about 143 kilometers away from the state’s capital.
“Marked by poor connectivity, people are facing huge problem of getting accessible to better health care facility,” Marwein said. He also added, “In view of this, people are turning to quacks and other unscientific medication, which may be harmful for them.”
According to him, the union is convinced that the only way to ensure provision of adequate basic health services is to expand the quantitative and qualitative service capacity of the sub-centre.
“It will be unfair for the state government if it deprives the people living in the remote border areas of such basic health care facilities,” he added.
When asked, the KSU leader informed that the minister has assured the delegation that he would direct the department to examine the issue.-By Our Reporter
