SHILLONG, FEB 21: United Democratic Party (UDP) has sought clarifications from the Election Commission of India (ECI) on the procurement of electronic voting machines (EVMs) by the Meghalaya’s district council affairs (DCA) department.
In a letter sent to the ECI, UDP secretary Allan F Dkhar said, “We seek clarifications as to whether the procurement of EVMs by the District Council Affairs Department of the Government of Meghalaya is valid and whether this has the sanction of the Election Commission of India.”
Dkhar informed that it was reported that HS Brahma, Election Commissioner, Election Commission of India had categorically stated that only the ECI and the State Election Commissioner can purchase EVMs.
UDP has brought Brahma’s notice, that the Meghalaya government district council department had recently purchased EVMs to be used for the ensuing district council elections for the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District
