SHILLONG, SEPT 7: Opposition United Democratic Party (UDP), one of the biggest regional political parties in Meghalaya, today released its first list of 28 candidates for the upcoming state Assembly elections, slated to be held early next year.
The list announced by the UDP Chief Donkupar Roy after the sitting of the state election committee (SEC) here on Thursday consisted of 18 candidates who will be contesting from the assembly seats in Khasi – Jaintia Hills region and 10 candidates from Garo Hills region.
The eight sitting legislators have reaffirmed their re-election from the party.
These include – Roy from Shella, Embhahlang Syiemlieh – Mawlai, Paul Lyngdoh – West Shillong, Jemino Mawthoh – Nongthymmai, Titosstarwell Chyne – Sohra, Remington Pyngrope – Mawkynrew, Metbah Lyngdoh – Mairang, Brolding Nongsiej – Mawthadraishan
The party ticket was also allotted to three sitting MDCs of JHADC and KHADC which include Moonlight Pariat from Jowai constituency, Rona Khymdeit – Nongpoh and Donkupar Sumer – Umsning.
Former deputy chief minister Bindo M Lanong, who is also party’s senior working president will also be contesting from East Shillong, a constituency presently represented by Congress legislator and cabinet minister Ampareen Lyngdoh.
The other candidates from Khasi Hills include Kyrmen Shylla – Khliehriat, First Force Deki Ramsiej – Umroi, former MLA Bindo M Lanong – East Shillong, former FKJGP president Joe Marwein – North Shillong, Olan Suin – Mawphlang, Savio Iawphniaw – Mawshynrut and Pius Marwein – Ranikor.
On the other hand, the ten candidates from Garo Hills are Arun N Marak – Songsak, Bartush R Marak – Rongjeng, Mahamsingh M Sangma – Williamnagar, Pillarson G Momin – Raksamgre, Kabul A Sangma – Dadenggre, Utpal Arengh – North Tura, Pallab D Areng – South Tura, Nidhuram Hajong – Mahendraganj, Nimarson Momin – Salmanpara and Luderburg Ch Momin – Kharkutta.
It may be mentioned here, the UDP has forged a pre-poll alliance with the Hill State People Democratic Party (HSPDP) for having a mutually understanding from 36 assembly seats in Khasi-Jaintia Hills and Garo National Council (GNC) from 24 seats in Garo Hills.
In Khasi-Jaintia Hills, the UDP will be contesting from 27 seats and its alliance partner – the HSPDP will be contesting from 19 seats.
Of these, 17 seats are reserved for the UDP, 10 seats for the HSPDP while nine constituencies have been declared as open seats, from which both the parties will have friendly contest.
Its alliance partner – the HSPDP had already announced 13 candidates out of 19 seats recently.
Asked, the UDP chief however said that the GNC has so far proposed to contest from only four constituencies.
Meanwhile, the candidates for the remaining constituencies will be finalised shortly by the SEC, he said.
