TURA,MAR 30: The disbanding ceremony for United A’chik Liberation Army (UALA), which was slated for this week, was postponed as the outfit sought more time from the government for putting up all its cadres together.
In December last year, the outfit had signed a formal peace pact with the state government and the disbanding was schedule for February and then it was postponed for March.
However, an emergent meeting was held on Wednesday at circuit house with the officials of police and district administration, which was attended by chairman of the outfit Novembirth Ch. Marak, commander-in-chief Norok X. Momin, general secretary Nagra Marak, amongst others.
Today’s meeting holds significance, as the commander-in-chief of the outfit Norok made his presence for the first time in the talks. He had remained absent during the signing of the peace pact as well, citing health issues, which had raised fear that Norok might not join the peace talks.
“His presence at the meeting today shows UALA’s sincerity for the peace talks. They have sought for additional time for the disbanding ceremony, as they have not been able to establish contact with their cadres, who are spread across Garo hills”, said Pravin Bakshi, deputy commissioner of West Garo Hills and chairman of the disbanding ceremony for UALA.
Inspector general of police FD Sangma, superintendent of police West Garo Hills Mukesh Singh, interlocutors for talks Rev. Frithing D. Sangma, Rev. Janang R. Sangma and Rev. Greaterburn R. Marak, attended the meeting.
The outfit has strength of 70 cadres. About 25 cadres have come forward and are presently camping at Baljek airport premises, near Jengjal in West Garo Hills, which has been designated as a “transit camp”. Bakshi informed that the disbanding is likely to take place in May, though the date for the ceremony has not been fixed.-From Our Correspondent
