SHILLONG, JAN 29: TUR criticized chief minister Mukul Sangma’s recent statement wherein he had said that home minister HDR Lyngdoh was not aware of what was taking place in the Inn owned by his son and termed this as trying to mislead the people. TUR also stated that as article 361 giving immunity to governors no longer operates for the ex Meghalaya governor Shanmuganathan and therefore speedy independent investigations into the sexual harassment case at the Raj Bhavan should begin in earnest.
In a statement issued on Sunday TUR questioned as to how people can have faith in the investigation on the trafficking of a young girl in Marvelene Inn when this inn is owned and run by HDR Lyngdoh’s son and wife.
The statement said as the state home minister all files of the investigation were directly accessible by Lyngodh and pointed out investigations into the management and staff of this inn was not even initiated till an FIR was filed by TUR and CSWO.
The statement also said recently on January 19 newspapers reported that three more persons were arrested in connection with sexually exploiting this minor in the same Marvelene Inn. TUR felt this is enough reason for the inn to be completely shut down, all owners, management and staff to be thoroughly investigated because unlike what Lyngdoh’s son said, it was not an isolated case involving only one waiter from that inn.
The statement said Marvelene inn seems to be a habitual place and a den of vice where such goings on regularly takes place. The statement demanded Lyngdoh’s step down or be removed. It also called for collective action to ensure this.
TUR also condemned Sangma, the BJP and others for belittling women and children’s safety as being a mere party political game. It said the BJP is going on an overdrive trying to damage control the fact that the BJP nominated Governor who was a senior RSS pracharak Shanmuganathan was a victim of conspiracy.
TUR considers the BJP tactic cheap and shameful and condemned their attempt to belittle such a grave crime as it said this man was involved in committing crime against women. It asserted that crimes against women and children goes beyond party politics and the fact that these representatives lacked foresight and a clear perspective on this means
