SHILLONG, MAY 28: Tribal chiefs in Meghalaya have sought the intervention of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi into the issue related to the Instrument of Accession and Annexed Agreement.
A delegation of 15 traditional chiefs (Syiem, Dolloi, Sirdar, Myntri, and Nokmas), from Khasi Hills, Jaintia Hills border of Bangladesh, and Nokmas from Garo Hills under the banner of Grand Council of Chiefs of Meghalaya (GCCM) traveled long distance to Shillong, to personally hand over the memorandum to the PM on Friday evening.
However, they learnt late evening that due to the busy scheduled of the Prime Minister, the traditional chiefs were advised to hand over the memorandum through the office of the Governor as a number of appointments request were cancelled.
GCCM chairman John F Kharshiing said that the memorandum is related to the Instrument of Accession and Annexed Agreement, accepted and signed by the Governor General of India and the Federation of Khasi States, which did not find mention with the Constitution of India, and this Constitutional Anomaly exist since last 68 years (17 August 1948 – 2016).
“Due to this, it has been causing conflicts at various levels,” he said.
He also informed that the memorandum also includes the DO Letter dated 13th October 1947, from the first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, addressed to Sardar Vallabhabhai Patel.
Similar memorandums have been submitted by the Khasi, Jaintia and Garo chiefs to past and present Presidents, and Prime Ministers of India to address the national commitments and constitutional anomaly. -By Our Reporter
