SHILLONG, AUG 22: To tap the potential of the state in football, Meghalaya sports & youth affairs minister Zenith Sangma said the government is contemplating to construct at least four international standard football stadia in the New Shillong Township (NST).
Sangma said the proposed stadiums will be constructed as per the specifications of FIFA and it will provide the much needed boost to the young talented footballers of the state. He informed, “Objective of the government is to promote quality of football since it will create avenues of employment for the youths.
Admitting that the sports infrastructure in Meghalaya is inadequate Sangma said the state government is willing to construct sports infrastructure at NST at an estimated budget of Rs 70 crore and the project is to be sanctioned by the union government.
Sangma also said that besides the football stadia in NST, the government proposed to construct artificial turf at Mawlai, Jowai and in Ampati though Shillong already has two artificial turfs.
Sangma also informed that the state government will be equipping rural areas with sports infrastructure as the government is preparing certain projects that needs the sanction of the union ministry of sports
With the proposed plan, the state government has an ambitious plan of developing sports infrastructure even at the blocks level. – By Our Reporter
