TURA, MAR 27: Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma decided to play the emotional chord with the people by trying to sell the idea of “secularism” and pro tribal ideology of Congress party during his campaign for Congress Tura Lok Sabha candidate Daryl William Momin on Thursday.
Addressing an election rally at Rongara, Sangma said, “A’chik in Bangladesh, Tripura and Assam do not enjoy the privileges the Garo enjoys in Meghalaya as the Congress has ensured the indigenous rights of the Garos in state”.
Sangma is shuttling around from one rally to another in Garo hills on a helicopter campaign to ensure that NPP candidate Purno Sangma is defeated.
Sangma dished out several rights enjoyed by the Garos of the state under sixth schedule. He said,
“You own the land, government has no ownership. You have rights over forest and natural resources. This was guaranteed by the visionary leaders of the Congress.”
Sangma said that late Capt Williamson Sangma, aptly called as the architect of Meghalaya and the founder chief minister of Meghalaya, launched the Congress party during Indira Gandhi’s tenure as Prime Minister, as he was convinced with the ideology of the party.
Sangma told the rally, “Captain Williamson is an acceptable figure among all tribes in Meghalaya. His contribution can never be forgotten. We are fortunate to have young and educated Daryl William Momin, grandson of Captain Williamson as our candidate to fulfill the aspiration of our people.”
Speaking about former Lok Sabha speaker and NPP candidate Purno Agitok Sangma, who had won nine consecutive times since 1977 from Tura parliamentary seat, Sangma said, “Purno has enjoyed all power and status as a Congress leader. Garo hills had given verdict in his favor for three decades. Today, he is shuffling around different parties. How can he fulfill our aspiration?”
Pitching hard for Daryl Momin, Sangma said, “It is time for all of us to elect Momin, who is a Congress nominee for Tura Lok Sabha seat”.
Enlightening the gathering at various rallies that Congress party in Meghalaya has been able to implement various development and welfare programme, Sangma said, “You have to learn to make your leaders accountable, which will ensure holistic development. I am working to ensure an accelerated growth for Meghalaya“.- From Our Correspondent
