“Seeds on Wheels 2013”

SHILLONG, NOV 19: The Basin Development Unit of East Garo hills district under the Meghalaya Basin Development and Livelihood Promotion Programme (MIBDLP) successfully conducted “Seeds on Wheels 2013” from November 9 to November 19.

Under this innovative initiative, 3 specially decorated vehicles and 9 dedicated officers traveled from market to market and conducted seed festivals in all the major weekly markets of East Garo Hills District. The Seed Festival is a platform where a farmer receives seeds, farming implements and all the information relating to agriculture.

The program concluded on Tuesday successfully at Rongsak market. As per the preliminary report, more than 9000 farmers benefited from this program. Agriculture department, Horticulture department and ATMA participated in all the seed festivals and distributed seeds and information.

Agriculture and Horticulture officers interacted with the farmers to create more awareness about latest farming technologies. During these festivals, some of the progressive farmers also participated by selling the indigenous seeds which have been aggregated by them.- By Our Reporter
