TURA, OCT 28: Armed men abducted a school teacher from remote village in North Garo hills on Tuesday. The teacher identified as Maliram Rabha was kidnapped from his residence at Damas Kaksona village, near Mendipathar, about 120 km from Tura.
Police claimed that suspected militants have taken the teacher deep inside a jungle from Chitukona village. Police say it could be the handiwork of Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA), who has used the name of another outfit A’chik Matgrik Tiger Force (AMTF).
“AMTF is a bogus group used by GNLA to kidnap and extort. There is no such group. GNLA is using the name, so that their image will not be tarnished. We are certain that this is a handiwork of GNLA commander Philiport”, said Jerry Marak, SP of North Garo Hills.
Marak also informed that Philiport and six other GNLA militants were spotted by locals near a jungle at Matchakol village, near Damas yesterday evening. “Locals say that the militants were seen moving towards a jungle near Chipakram village today”, he added.
Marak also said the militants were on kidnapping spree to ensure money for the upcoming festive season. “The closure of coal has been a huge burden to the outfits, so they are desperate to earn though kidnappings and ransom”, he opined.
Rabha’s family is yet to receive any ransom demand so far. In July this year, a school teacher Sandia Sangma was abducted by AMTF, but was release on the same day.- From Our Correspondent
