SHILLONG, JAN 2: As the wave over the demand for justice to the Delhi gang rape victim Damini- who unfortunately succumbed to injuries related to rape- refuses to die down, the Civil Society Women Organisation (CSWO) has called upon concern citizens of Meghalaya to extend support to the Bharat Bandh called Thursday and show solidarity in demanding for a tougher law against perpetrators of rape and violence against women.
In a press statement issued Wednesday CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing said, “This crime (rape) is a threat looming large over the society and we have to be united in fighting against such crime as the government has been stubborn.”
CSWO is also demanding that the state law commission should be active rather than passive as it is today so that women security concern can be addressed. The statement issued said that state governments all over the country should take security issue of women and children seriously and stringent law to deal with the criminals who unleash violence against the fairer sex and children must be passed.
Meghalaya also has its share of violence against women, especially cases where girls and even minors have been raped and the accused have mostly gone unpunished.
Even before the Damini gang-rape took place, an eighteen years old school girl was gang raped by sixteen men in Williamnagar, the district headquarter of East Garo hills in Meghalaya. The rape of the school girl by sixteen men shocked concern citizens and ngos of the state and raised serious issue of safety of women in a matrilineal Meghalaya.
Then the Damini incident only triggered the fear that women across the country are not safe and, therefore, ngos and civil society in Meghalaya have been actively supporting the movement for making India a safer place for women to live by enacting a tougher law dealing with all aspects of women violence– By Our Reporter
