SHILLONG, NOV 12: Coal miners in Meghalaya has demanded thst the state government strengthens the manpower for the anti dacoity camp located in the coal-rich areas of West Khasi hills district because of increase criminal activities after the NGT ban.
The issue was brought to the State Commissioner of Home Affairs by a joint delegation led by the State Co-ordination Committee of Coal Owners, Miners & Dealers Forum (SCCCOMDF) and Meghalaya Mine Owners & Exporters Association during a meeting recently.
“There is a need to make the police force more pro-active and to provide vehicles to the Anti Dacoity camp at Nonghyllam near Borsora with armed – man for patrolling the areas to instill confidence and security to the people,” SCCCOMDF media relation secretary Balios Swer said.
The demand also came in the wake of two separate incidents where miscreants attempted to murder a coal miner identified as Smingpool Nongbri at Nongjri near Borsora.
Nongbri was badly injured when miscreants shot him. The incident took place on November 3, Swer informed.
Another incident took place in the same area where one Dham Sing Hashah, also a coal miner, was robbed with several lakhs of rupees after he was kidnapped by miscreants. He, however, managed to escape, Swer said while condemning the two incidents.
According to Swer, such incidents are frequently happening in the coal belt areas of the state after the ban on coal mining by the NGT.
Stating that the situation is worse, Swer said the lack of infrastructures and man-power of the state police department has led the goons and the extortionists to have a field day at the cost of the miner’s lives and the general public is also made to suffer for no fault of theirs.- By Our Reporter
