Steps to improve Education

SHILLONG, MAR 19: South West Garo hills deputy commissioner  Ram Singh held a meeting with the heads of various educational institutions in the presence of the district school education officer on Wednesday  to discuss several issues plaguing the education system and ways to improve education scenario in the district.

Addressing the heads of schools during the meeting, Singh expressed his concern over the poor results and very low pass percentage of the students in SSLC exams in the past years and emphasized the need to improve the quality of education and the management of schools in the district.

Singh said regular inspection of the schools would be conducted by sending magistrates and at times he would himself visit the schools and directed the school heads to strictly adhere to school timings, to strictly maintain school discipline, to have regular morning assembly, ensure regularity of teachers, discourage use of local language in schools and use English as medium of teaching.

Singh also  said that the District School Education Officer would be sending guidelines that they have prepared to all the schools, adding that it was up to the heads of schools to guide and discipline their students. Referring to the CM’s Career Guidance Programme, which would be implemented in all the schools, Singh asked, “How will the children make their careers if they are not motivated and oriented to study?”

Singh also asked the school heads to ensure that the teachers do not smoke, chew betel nut or tobacco in front of their students, which he had noticed during his visits to some schools in the district, saying that being the role models they must create an aura around the children. The teachers must also motivate the students not only to pass but to excel and pass with good percentage, he added.

During the course of the discussion some of the heads of schools apprised Singh of the difficulties in supervising errant teachers and problems they have with the domineering school management committees (SMCs) and coping with the students of class nine who come from primary schools with poor foundation and sought for extra classes to deal with such students.

Singh assured them that their issues and problems were being noted and would be addressed at an appropriate level and also urged the school heads to hold regular meetings with the villagers, parents and teachers to regulate the activities of their respective SMCs. He also informed that he would call for similar meeting also with the BRCs and CRCs in the district.- By Our Reporter
