SHILLONG, JUNE 5: Chief minister Mukul Sangma said the ‘Meghalaya Special Court Bill, 2014’ will be introduced in the extended assembly session scheduled to start from Friday.
Sangma told reporters after cabinet meeting on Thursday, “We are going to place the proposed Meghalaya Special Court Bill 2014 in the upcoming session.”
Sangma informed the proposed bill was the fastest cabinet memo that the government had acted following a review meeting held yesterday regarding the gruesome and brutal killing of a mother of four children by a banned militant outfit – Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) in South Garo Hills District.
Sangma said, “It is time for the state to have a mechanism for speedy trial and disposal of cases to ensure that justice is not delayed.” He informed that the special courts would be set up in consultation with the Meghalaya High Court. Such courts would take up any cases and ensure their speedy trial.-By Our Reporter
