Slum kids win gold, silver in martial art

Shillong, Sept 4: Six of the participants in the 3rd Meghalaya Open Taekwondo Championship organized by Meghalaya Moonlight Taekwondo Academy held at Shillong recently are under-privilege children under the care and protection of Shishu Shiksha Ghar.

These six children from Shishu Shiksha Ghar were receiving training in Taekwondo since last one month within which they showed their talents and dedication. They were rewarded with an opportunity to participate in State Level Taekwondo Championship.

Their coach Ram Tamang saw to it that these six children got the best of the training so that their dedication pays off.

Residents of slum areas, these six children lived in vulnerable and distressful surroundings. But these children showed that they had the talents for martial arts and the Shishu Shiksha Ghar admitted them to their academy and provided training in taekwondo.

Once they were given the opportunity, these children showed their excellence for which they were chosen to participate in the State Level Taekwondo Championship.

Out of six children, Ravina won gold medal and Rina won silver medal.  These children including the gold and silver medalists works during the day time but despite that they excelled during the competition.

Gold medalist Rabina has been selected by the Meghalaya Taekwondo Association to participate in the National Level Taekwondo championship to be held at Lucknow on October 2012.

All these children will be felicitated by Shishu Shiksha Ghar on September 5 on the occasion of Teacher’s Day Celebration at Jhalupara Community Hall at 11:00 a.m. By Our Reporters
