SHILLONG, JULY 5: It is not the old world belief that an apple a day keeps the doctor away, but modern scientifically proven finding that a good night’s sleep makes your day.
USA based world renowned sleep specialist Dr Deelip Chatterjee is eyeing the north east region for his first of its kind research to be conducted in the country on “sleep disorder” which he believed if treated, can free the people and the government from having to bear the brunt on expensive health care.
“The recently launched state of the art, sleep research facility-Med Solutions Sleep Centre in Guwahati is working on a project in the North East in collaboration with the Assam government to decrease the cost of health care by using sleep to fight diseases,” Dr Chatterjee said here.
He informed, “On my visit to many of hospitals, I found that there are so many patients in the ICUs who had a clear cut sleep disorder,” adding “If those sleep disorder were identified and treated, the government can save lakhs and lakhs of rupees in these people who are in the ICUs all the time at 20 rupees a bed.”
“One of the project we are working on is to keep these patients healthy, keeping them out of ICUs and hospitals decreasing the cost of medicines,” he said while informing that it is first of its kind research being done anywhere in the world using sleep medicine as social responsible preventive medical cure.
Stating that sleep medicine is a baby of medicine, Dr Chatterjee said, “While every specialty in the world wants to give you pills, but this particular sleep specialty wants to take away your pills… Everyone else in the worlds wants to give you a pill and take your money to make you happy, but we want to make you happy the way you are design to be happy.”
According to him, if the patient with heart disease, depression, attention deficit disorder, hypertension or Alzheimer’s disease was to look up the disease on the Internet they would find one shocking fact. Good sleep would vastly improve their disease.
Every patient is hungry for a healthy cure, he said, they eat improbable spices and drink outrageous concoctions hoping for a cure. “Every diabetic has had his share of bitter ‘karela’ juice. Yet not one of them has been sent for sleep consultation to find out whether a sleep disorder is causing or contributing to the disease,” he stated.
“Sleep is an evolutionary cure for most diseases. It heads the list of all natural cures. It is more effective than most medications. Medications control the manifestations of disease. Sleep cures the disease,” he revealed.
Elaborating more on this, he further explained that sleep does not just provide rest while the organ heals. Sleep shuts down the organ and repairs. It is an extremely dynamic process of healing that is so important that it paralyzes the body and the thinking brain.
“While the body is paralyzed and unconscious, a complicated series of brainwaves controls blood flow and activates healing mechanisms in every organ,” he said.
According to him, good sleep is not an ‘off’ switch where the body can rest. Good sleep is the operating room with the anesthesiologist and the surgeon working frantically to repair the body and every individual organ. In this analogy, every organ has its own surgeon.
Stating that there is a lot of sleep disorder problem in this region, he said, we are targeting this area because it is racially mixed and there is lot of sleep disorder.
“I choose the North East on ground that NE is racially mixed as the more mix the race is the worst sleep disorder,” he added.
Pointing out that biggest culprit of sleep disorder is our lifestyle, he said, “We teach our children that smoking and drinking are bad but we do not teach them that avoiding sleep is just as unhealthy,” adding “We watch TV late at night, hold bright laptops close to our eyes and drink caffeinated drinks in the evening.”
He added, any person who uses an alarm clock to wake up should be aware that they have not adjusted their lifestyle to provide the healthiest medication of all, good sleep.
Dr Chatterjee also said that one in 10 people has a sleep disorder.
“When one considers that these patients develop illnesses like hypertension, diabetes, heart diseases, strokes, simple math dictates that one of every two or three patients in a doctor’s office has a debilitating sleep disorder,” he stated.
He stated that good sleep makes us cleverer, better looking and happier adding if you had to make a fashion choice for a party, invest in an extra hour of sleep the night before.- By Our Reporter
