SHILLONG, MAR 24: Shaken by the rape and murder of 19 years old girl, the Upper Shillong residents are demanding a police outpost in their area for the safety of their women folk and also for preventing such heinous crime for reoccurring.
The demand was made during a solidarity march taken out by hundreds of residents of 4th Mile, Upper Shillong as a mark to condemn the rape and murder of the girl.
Sharing the sentiments expressed by the people, village headman L Nongtraw said that the state government should consider the demand for setting up of police outpost in the area at the earliest.
“We hope that the government would take the voice of the people into consideration for strengthening policing in the area to ensure the safety and security of everybody especially women and children,” he said.
He also emphasized the need to examine and verify the documents of new settlers before allowing them to reside in the village.
Earlier, twenty-four year old Vicky Syiemlieh was arrested for his alleged involvement in the case, after his mother decided to hand him over to the police.
The body of the girl was recovered from a jungle near her residence at 4 ½ Mile last week.
Police had also indicated that it could be a possible rape case as the body of the girl bore marks of sexual and physical assault.
According to East Khasi hills SP M Kharkrang, the investigation is still on and police are waiting for post mortem report.
Earlier, president of the Seng Longkmie of 5th Mile Upper Shillong broke down as she speaks at the gathering expressing her grief on the incident.
Stating that such incident should not be allowed to happen again, she said, “No parents should shelter such sons who commit such evil acts against the society.” She also urged all the men in the society to act as guardians of women.
President Seng Samla (local youths) K Kharkongor said, “I’m filled with enormous grief on what has happened in our locality in which a young girl who had just completed her matric examination lost her life in the hands of evil doers.”
The 19 years old girl had just completed her matriculation examination that concluded recently.-By Our Reporter
