Shillong, August 23: After resigning from the NCP before contesting the presidential election, former Lok Sabha speaker Purno Agitok Sangma is officially launching a new political party the National People’s Party (NPP) Friday.
The NCP party office at Lower Lauchmiere is getting a facelift as the NPP official logo of a book in a green and a white circle inside an orange square has replaced the NCP’s clock in preparation for Friday’s launched of the new political party.
The NPP is the outcome of the support Sangma received from “tribal” leaders across the country during the presidential poll. Interestingly, the Meghalaya unit of NCP is backing the NPP and is hosting the official launching of the new party.
The NCP in Meghalaya with thirteen legislators is led led by P A Sangma’s youngest son Conrad K Sangma who is the leader of opposition in the Meghalaya legislative assembly.
Workers were seen erecting a giant “welcome” board in the heart of the city welcoming Sangma senior and V Hangkhanlian, MLA and president of the National People’s Party in Manipur.
It is expected that the thirteen NCP legislators will subsequently resign from the NCP to join the new party. However, party sources said that Sangma’s youngest daughter Agatha Sangma who is an NCP MP and union minister of State will continue to be with the Sharad Pawar’s party.- By Our Reporter
