Shillong, Oct 4: Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma said the international borders in the north eastern states should be sealed to prevent arms from getting into the hands of the militant groups operating in the region.Sangma told reporters, “The main issue has been free access to sophisticated arms and ammunition by the militants,” on the sideline of a police program.
According to Sangma, these arms are not manufactured in Shillong or any other locations in the region but are smuggled across the International borders.
Sangma informed that large parts of these borders are unfenced and difficult to man and the state government has conveyed and also in regular touch with the union government in this regards.
Sangma felt once the borders are sealed, this will ensure that arms and ammunition available to the militant groups dries up and only then we will see that there is sustainable peace.
Assuring that his government is seized of the problem of militancy in the state, Sangma said, “There is a need to overcome the issue of militancy and to see the actual root cause. Only the use of police force and neutralizing any existing militancy will not end militancy as another one will surface.” He felt there is a need to address this whole issue and also the root cause of militancy.
Sangma said, “This is exactly what the government is actually engaged with.”
Informing that several measures are being taken by his government to improve policing in the state, Mukul said his government has adopted a strategy to review the strength of police organizations’ manpower in police outposts and police stations.
Sangma said, “We have already taken some concrete steps to review and sanction number of police stations, police outposts and we have submitted a number of comprehensive actions plans including creation of more police stations across the state.” – By Our Reporter
