SHILLONG, APR 26: After a long hiatus the drive to clean Wahumkhrah was undertaken by the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) in collaboration with the Syiem of Mylliem on Friday.
People wearing “Save the water secure the future” t-shirts provided by the East Khasi hills deputy commissioner office were seen participating in the cleaning of Wahumkhrah .
The cleaning drive was organized under the Rejuvenation and Protection of Wahumkhrah Project and started at around 9 am from Umkaliar in Nongmynsong.
KHADC chief executive member PM Syiem stressed on the importance of cleaning Wahumkhrah as he felt saving the river is essential for the future generation. He, however, acknowledge that cleaning the river just be through mass participation.
Syiem informed that this is the first phase; the second and third phase will follow. He said the cleaning drive will be successful only if the Rangbah Shnong and the people residing along the localities beside Wahumkhrah river participate the project will be a reality.
Syiem appealed to the people not to litter or throw garbage into the river and also asked those residing beside the Wahumkhrah to build septic tank so that the night soil doesn’t flow into the river. He said those who cannot afford to build the septic tank must approach the deputy commissioner’s office so that the authority can provide help of give suggestion on how to go about building a septic tank.- By Our Reporter
