SHILLONG, APR 1: The Chief Minister-level talks on the inter-state boundary between Meghalaya and Assam held today at Brahmaputra state Guest house today.
Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal met Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma for the first time since he assumed office in May last year. The meeting between the two state heads was held after seven years.
In the meeting the Interstate boundary dispute issue between Assam and Meghalaya was taken up.
“We are all aware of areas of difference along interstate border between Assam and Meghalaya and certain discussion held on this and as a follow up at chief secretary level further discussion will be held so that the leadership of both the states comes into certain conclusion to mutually resolve the issue which is mutually acceptable to the people of both the state,” chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma said after the meeting.
There are 12 sector of difference between these two states. In the past, Meghalaya has submitted documents and maps on its claim to the 12 sectors or areas of Upper Tarabari, Gizang Reserve Forest, Hahim, Langpih, Borduar, Boklapara, Nongwah-Matamur, Khanapara-Pillangkata, Deshdemoreah, Block I and Block II, Khanduli-Psiar and Ratacherra.
Beside this other issues pertaining to mutually dealing with militancy, criminals, cross border crimes were also discussed.
“Beside that issues of dealing with militancy, criminals etc has been discussed and joint action is proposed by both the states ,” dr. Sangma said.
It was also proposed that a joint action will be taken by both the states to deal with the menace. Issue of environmental degradation along Assam Meghalaya border was also taken up.
About setting up of border commission the chief Minister said, both the states have all made their stand clear and now mutually at the bilateral level further engagement will be done.
“regarding the the Border commission they have all made their stand clear and now mutually at the bilateral level we have to further engage as a culmination of today’s discussion at the chief secretary level on all the issues that has been placed before our counterpart will be discussed and proceed further ,” he said.
Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda sonowal said, “We have discussed boundary issue, as well as militancy, criminal activitives along the border during the meeting. We have decided to further hold Chief Secretary level talks between these two states so that all the pertaining to boundary dispute can be resolve soon.”
On Militancy Assam chief Minister said, ” Joint action will be taken up against militants by Assam Meghalaya so that peace along border can be maintained. “
Sonowal had earlier exuded confidence about resolving Assam’s decades-old border disputes with Meghalaya, Nagaland and Mizoram through consultations and mutual understandings. The boundary row between Assam, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh is pending in the Supreme Court.
