SHILLONG, FEB 15: Former assembly deputy speaker Sanbor Shullai today threatened to file a PIL against the PHE department if it fails to address the problem of water scarcity within two days. In a letter to the Chief Engineer of the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department, Shullai said, “You are requested to take stern and early action to solve this problem within two days failing which PIL will be immediately filed.”
The South Shillong NCP legislator informed that the decision to file a PIL on water scarcity problem was unanimously taken in a public meeting held recently.
He said there is no improvement of water supply by the department thereby creating great difficulties to the public despite paying water tax to the PHE.
Residents of Jaiaw, Mawkhar, Riatsamthiah and adjoining areas besides Laban and Laitumkhrah are facing acute shortage of drinking water due to lack of coordination between the PHE and Shillong Municipal Board.
The PHE inister Prestone Tynsong had recently stated that the department is ready to take over the responsibility for supply of water provided that the existing Municipal Act is amended.
He also suggested the need for better coordination between the PHED and SMB.
