Money seized from Cong candidate’s kin

squadSHILLONG, FEB 18: Thirteen lakhs of rupees was seized by the flying squad in West Khasi hills district from a driver identified as Banteilang Kharsyntiew, who is said to be a close relative of Kingford Kharsyntiew, Congress candidate from Rambrai-Jyrngam constituency in the same district.

The seizure was made on Sunday night at around 10.30 pm after Banteilang, who was driving a Maruti Alto bearing a registration number ML-05- F 0798, refuse to stop the vehicle at a Pamphyrnai, which is about 10 kilometers east of Nongtoin, the district headquarter of West Khasi hill, even after the flying squad members signal it to stop.

West Khasi hills deputy commissioner who is also the district election officer S Kharlyngdoh said, “ When the driver refuse to stop the vehicle the flying squad members got suspicious and shouted at him to stop.”

The driver did stop after he heard the flying squad members shouting at him. Kharlyngdoh told reporters over the phone that a search was conducted by the flying squad members wherein Rs 13 lakhs was recovered wrapped in a plastic bag.

Banteilang was immediately taken to Nongstoin police station for questioning.

Kharsyntiew revealed to the police that the money belonged to one M/S Ford Auto Spare Parts, Upper New Nongstoin and was meant to be paid to a person in Shillong, but as the person was no available, he was returning back to Nongstoin.

It was also found that the money was withdrawn from the State Bank of India, Nongstoin branch but Banteilang feign ignorance as to when the withdrawal was made.

Police released Kharsyntiew after questioning, but seize the vehicle.

Kharlyngdoh also informed that the authority came to know that the driver is related to Kingford Kharsyntiew but said they were still investigating whether the seized money was actually meant to be used in Rambrai Jyrngam constituency or for some other purpose.- By Our Reporter
