SHILLONG, OCT 25: National Peoples’ Party chief Conrad K. Sangma on Tuesday introduced Benedict R. Marak to the people of Raksamgre constituency in West Garo Hills in presence of over 5000 people and sought their cooperation and support to ensure Benedict’s victory in the upcoming 2018 election.
“Raksamgre has remained neglected for years. In absence of proper roads, the people at large and farmers in particular have to face hardship. The area has huge potential in farming sector and the farmers are very progressive here but due to poor road connectivity the farm produces do not get the right market”, he said.
He said that if NPP gets the mandate of the people in 2018 election, the road in State would be accorded a top priority.
“It is a painful situation that due to poor road, the people in the rural areas of Garo Hills do not have access to proper education, health and other facilities. It is a fact that because of poor road the delivery of government’s welfare programme fails to be implemented in the right earnest. Development of a region largely depends on road and we as a party are concern about it. We have a vision that there should be equal development across Meghalaya and the issue of economic disparity is addressed”, he said.
He told the crowd that after being elected as MP of Tura Lok Sabha constituency, he has raised the issue of good telecom connectivity for North East, particularly Garo Hills, where several areas are still to receive mobile connectivity.
“I had several rounds of meeting with service providers for installation of towers in Garo Hills, so that people receive uninterrupted mobile connectivity across the region. We live in a digital age and connectivity is very important today for all our necessary engagement. Living out of digital space put us in darkness, so it is important that in modern era, we are not left out”, Conrad added.
He told the crowd that Airtel, Jio and Aircel have given their commitment to improve mobile and internet connectivity in Garo Hills.
Talking elaborately on education scenario of Garo Hills, particularly in unreached and hilly areas, Conrad informed the crowd that NPP’s prime concern would be to improve the education sector in the State. He said that the NPP would make efforts to resolve issues related with teachers. He also mentioned that efforts would be made to ensure that teachers should remain upto-date and undergo orientation programme by providing sufficient time, flexibility and infrastructure so that they are available to make learning more interesting.
“We will ensure that rural schools are equipped with right infrastructure and the teachers get adequate support for discharging their responsibilities”, he added.
He told the crowd to support the candidature of Benedict Marak and strengthened NPP. “Benedict is an able leader. He is passionate to work for the people. He wants to engage and understand your problems and address it. We see a future leader in Benedict to champion the cause of the people of Raksamgre constituency”, he asserted.
