TURA, NOV 2: A conglomeration of traders’ on Monday body decided to hold silent protest rally for removal of the chief executive officer (CEO) of Tura Municipal Board (TMB) Zenithski J Sangma tomorrow.
The silent protest seeking removal of CEO of TMB will begin at 11 am from Tura bazaar and passed through Hawakhana, Babupara and culminate at deputy commissioners’ office.
The decision to hold the rally was taken at a meeting held at district auditorium, which was attended by at least 800 traders of Tura. During the traders’ body meeting held at noon, barring Tura Super Market and Municipal marketing hub, all shops in the town remained closed.
The traders’ bodies vehemently raised their protest against the head of municipal board Zenithski, whom they termed as a “rouge officer”.
The traders’ bodies claimed that the shops at Municipal marketing hub (MMH) and Tura Super Market (TSM) were opened, as the CEO of TMB forced them to do so warning them that their licence will be cancelled and shop will be sealed.
The MMH and TSM is property of the TMB.
The CEO of Tura Municipal Board is facing the ire of the traders after he served notice to traders for closure of their shops during an alleged bandh called on August 14 and 15 by the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA).
The CEO of Tura Municipal Board had served the notice based on Meghalaya High Court ruling on bandh in the state. The officer had first served show cause notice and had later asked the traders to submit affidavit as to why they kept their shops closed during the alleged bandh.
The traders’ bodies also alleged that the CEO of TMB had arbitrarily threatened many traders of Tura and have verbally and physically abused them. Citing an instance of a trader, who was called by the CEO at his chamber and slapped, the traders bodies said, “It is unbecoming of an officer, who is exercising excessive power”.
They claim that the traders of Tura are living under immense fear as the officer is after them. They also claim that in other districts of Garo hills, the municipal board has not served any notice or show cause for the alleged bandh during August 14 and 15.
Recently, the traders’ bodies have met urban affairs minister Ampareen Lyngdoh in Shillong explaining to her about the officers’ unruly and highhanded behavior.
The district administration official informed that today’s meeting was held without any information given to the deputy commissioner or the superintendent of police.-From Our Correspondent
