SHILLONG, FEB 17: Expressing concern over the attacks on Christian institutions, churches and threat of mass conversion, former Lok Sabha Speaker and Tura Lok Sabha Purno Agitok Sangma has sought immediate intervention of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and stop the recurrence of such unpleasant incidents, especially in Delhi.
Sangma, who is also the National People’s Party (NPP) national president, shot off a letter to Modi and requested him to see that such incidents of attacks on Christian do not recur.
Sangma said, “In the circumstances, I shall be obliged if you would be pleased to personally intervene and take appropriate measures to prevent the recurrence of these incidents and allay the feelings of the Christians.”
In the letter to Modi Sangma informed that he had received communication from the conference of the Catholic Bishops of India, appealing for his-Modi- intervention in upholding the rule of law, peace and harmony in the context of untoward incidents that have occurred recently in different parts of India, deeply disturbing the Christian community.
Sangma further said that the community has expressed serious concerns about torching the church buildings, attacks on Christian institutions and threats of mass reconversions.
“It has expressed shock over what they call “police manhandling” of even women, children and nuns in New Delhi about ten days back,” Sangma said adding that the community also feels that Christians are being effectively denied the freedom of conscience, apart from equality before law and equal protections of the laws.
Stating that it was totally refreshing to all the people of the country including political practitioners when Modi announced his policy of “Sab ka sath; sab ka vikas”, Sangma said, “I am sure, therefore that you do not approve of the above incidents.”- By Our Reporter
