SHILLONG, MAY 16: Even as a jubilant NPP president Purno Agitok Sangma who clinched the Tura parliamentary seat said that he prefers to go back to parliament and raise the problems of Meghalaya and Garo hills instead of hankering for cabinet berth, Congress MP Vincent Pala who retained his Shillong seat attributes his victory to the collective efforts of party leaders, workers and the electorates.

Pala, however, said that the debacle of the Congress at the national level is a lesson for the party to remain united.

Pala retained the Shillong seat defeating his nearest rival Independent candidate PBM Basaiawmoit by a margin of over 40,000 votes. Pala polled a 2,09,288 votes followed by PBM Basaiawmoit 1,68,940 votes, UDP candidate Paul Lyngdoh 1, 06,806 and BJP candidate Shibun Lyngdoh who garnered 95,909 votes.

The Shillong seat witnessed an eight corner contest while for the Tura Lok Sabha seat it was a straight fight between NPP candidate Purno A Sangma and Congress nominee Darly William CH Momin.

Sangma polled  2,39,301 votes to Daryl who garnered 1,99, 585 votes.

Expressing his gratitude to the Shillong parliamentary seat electorates, Pala said the Modi waves did not impact the electorates here as he still managed to win by a good margin.”

Saying that the electorates in the country, especially the youths, has voted for a change this time, he nonetheless added that he is happy to see that the party in power has a thumping majority so that it can take certain decision for the country’s good. He said, “But let us see for five years as the electorates might want the Congress back.”

Meanwhile in Garo hills Sangma, who won the Tura seat for the record ten times, said that the margin of his win in this election was slender compared to earlier elections as he was  fighting against money power, various  elements sponsored by the head of the state, false propaganda, false promises and against the entire state machinery.

Sangma said he had to battle 13 Congress legislators, more than 20
MDCs which was a big task.  He also pointed out that while he was campaigning from a wheelchair, the chief minister used helicopter to campaign for Darly.

Even as he left the decision of allotting a cabinet berth on the Prime Minister in waiting Narendra Modi saying he has the wisdom to choose his cabinet team, Sangma however said he will try and convince all the political parties for separate state for the Garo region and Khasi & Jaintia state.- By Our Reporter
