TURA, FEB 26: Meghalaya Animal Husbandry and Veterinary director Dr. JS Jyrwa and South Garo hills deputy commissioner SN Marak on Thursday honoured four progressive farmers of the district at Livestock mela cum workshop held at Baghmara.
During the mela, the indigenous breed of pig – Chambil Wak were also sold. The department is promoting breeding of the variety.
Professionals and culinary experts say that Chambil Wak variety of Garo hills is delicious and tastier than other breeds. “It is small in structure and is an indigenous variety exclusively found in Garo hills”, an official said.
Kraisbinath Ch. Momin of Dambuk Aga, Leru M. Sangma of Rongkrekgittim, Samson N. Marak of Panda and Shima N. Marak of Gasuapara were honoured for taking up activities on dairy, goatery, piggery and poultry farming.
An official informed that these farmers had taken up the activities themselves without receiving any assistance from the government or other funding agencies. The official also informed that the unique mela to promote animal husbandry activities was held for the first time in the district of South Garo Hills in a big scale.
The other highlights of the daylong programme were talks on setting up different livestock farming and entrepreneurship with assistance from different line departments. During the mela, various department of the district also put up their stalls to highlight different programmes of the government for the welfare of the people.-From Our Correspondent
