SHILLONG, AUG 11: Leaders of the Ka Sur Ka Bri U Hynniewtrep (KSKBUH) on Thursday said the demand for justice for the former HNLC leader (L) Cheristerfield Thangkhiew should not be linked with the upcoming Independence Day celebrations in the state.
This came after KSKBUH leader Donbok Kharlyngdoh was summoned by the Incharge of Mawlai police station with regards to the decision of the group to urge people to put up black flags in front of their houses and vehicles from August 13 to August 15, as a mark of protest against the state government’s failure to take action against the police officials involved in the alleged killing of (L) Thangkhiew.
As a mark to pay rich tribute to the ex-HNLC leader on his first death anniversary, the KSKBUH has decided to show a short documentary film of (L) Cheristerfield Thangkhiew at Mawdatbaki Stand Bus at 7 pm on August 12. This will be followed by laying of floral wreaths and putting up of black flags on August 13.
After meeting with the Mawlai police, Kharlyngdoh told reporters that they had made it abundantly clear that the group had not forced the people to put black flags instead of the national flags.
“There are those trying to hijack the objective by saying that we are forcing the people not to put up the national flags on the mentioned dates,” he said adding “Accordingly, we have maintained that we don’t want to link our demand for justice for (L) Thangkhiew with the Independence Day celebrations in the state.”
“We also request the police not to mix the two occasions since August 13 is the first death anniversary of (L) Thangkhiew and August 15 is the Independence Day celebration,” he said.
He also maintained that the group is not forcing anybody in as far as the putting up of flags is concerned.
“However, we leave it to the public whether they want to put up black flags or they want to put up the national flag, it is up to them,” he said.
