SHILLONG, AUG 20: The state police have written to the health department on the need to conduct a medical board in case an accused person is admitted in the hospital for more than seven days to determine the exact cause of ailment and whether it is genuine or not.
“We have written to the health department 3 months ago to conduct a medical board in case an accused person is admitted for more than seven days to determine whether it is a genuine case or not,” East Khasi Hills District police chief Davis NR Marak told reporters here on Monday.
He said though it is not mandatory but it was however notice that in recent times a lot of people have taken refuge of the hospitals.
“Therefore, it is for the medical board to determine whether an accused person needs to be hospitalized or not,” the SP added.
According to him, the medical board will comprise of a group of doctors who will examine everything and accordingly certify the genuiness of the ailment suffered by the accused person.
The statement of the district police chief also came as a reaction to a query on the case related to the recent arrest of a senior government official, who was the main accused behind the July 10-petrol bomb attack on the Meghalaya Public Service Commission’s office.
Grandwill Harly Passah, a suspended MCS officer and former Block Development Officer of Jirang C&RD Block, was arrested after he surrendered before the police on July 25.
However, according to the SP the accused officer was immediately hospitalized soon after he was arrested and police have not been able to examine him till today.
“The main accused who we have arrested is still hospitalized and so far we have not been able to examine him. Earlier, he was released from the hospital recently but he again got admitted in the hospital,” he said.
When asked, Marak however said police cannot say what kind of ailment the accused person is suffering from because there is no certificate received so far to that effect adding but it was under the doctor’s advice that he had been hospitalized.
Earlier, a lower court had also remanded Passah to seven days police custody. But police are yet to take him into custody due to his ‘health condition’.
However, Marak said that the police will soon send a reminder to the health department to speed up the need to conduct a medical board on such cases.
Reacting to a query, the SP said that the police are yet to establish the ‘motive’ for the attack on the room of the MPSC secretary WM Booth. “We will also have to investigate whether some more people are involved in the case,” he added.
It may be mentioned here that two unidentified persons went to the office of the MPSC and lobbed a petrol bomb in the room of the Commission’s Secretary WAB Booth damaging important documents, computers etc on July 10.
The four arrested includes a person, who was paid to hire two others to lob a petrol bomb, and the other was the one who waited for them in a vehicle that was parked near the office.
