Police told to stop extortion

SHILLONG, MAY 23: Even as the meeting of the nodal officers of Assam and Meghalaya is slated to be held on May 30, the Meghalaya government directed the police department to take necessary steps to stop  the extortions by Assam based militant outfits in disputed Block II area.

KSU general secretary Auguster Jyrwa informed that home minister Roshan Warjri informed the union delegation that the police have been directed to take all necessary steps to ensure that cases of extortion in the area are stopped.

The Assam based militant outfit, the Karbi People Liberation Tigers (KPLT) is engaging in an extortion drive on Khasi villagers residing in the disputed Block II area in Ri Bhoi district.

The KSU delegation in its meeting with Warjri also highlighted the atrocities and harassment by Assam police against the local villagers in Moolber village in Block I area in Jaintia hills region even as it urged the state government to find ways and means to resolve the age old boundary dispute with neigbouring Assam.

Jyrwa told reporters after the meeting, “We have demanded to the state government to provide adequate security to the people living along the inter-state borders with Assam by deploying security personnel and setting up of more border police out posts until the time it resolve the boundary issue.”

Warjir informed the delegation that a meeting at the level of the nodal officers of both Assam and Meghalaya government will be held at Guwahati on May 30. She said, “All these issues will be highlighted in the upcoming meeting of both the states on May 30.”

Stating that boundary dispute has been there for quite a long time, Warjri told the delegation that the state government is well aware of the problems and is hopeful that some settlement will be made with Assam.

Warjri also informed that state government is still examining on the demand for setting up of more police outposts in the border areas of the state.- By Our Reporter
