TURA,NOV 13: Police recovered the body of a middle aged planter who was abducted by armed men last week from East Garo Hills district. The body of Ropson T Sangma, a plantation owner, was recovered yesterday evening from Rongpachu jungle, six days after he was kidnapped from his plantation at Rongapgre where he was residing with his wife.
The body bore gunshot wounds, police informed. Ropson Sangma, son of Late Singreng R Sangma of Rongjeng Waja, was temporarily staying with his wife in the plantation when armed men came and abducted him on November 6.
The planter had earlier shifted out of his permanent residence at Rongjeng following a previous attempt by unknown persons to forcibly enter his premises. Worried over the incident he moved to his plantation where he kept guard with a government licensed shotgun.
However it did not deter the attackers who managed to sneak in and whisked him away. It is believed that the attackers may have earlier demanded money from the victim who refused to pay up forcing the killers to target him.
Police do not rule out the involvement of two Garo militant groups, Liberation of A’chik Elite Force (LAEF) and A’chik National Liberation Army (ANLA). Both groups are said to operate in the area serving demand notes and extorting money from traders and businessmen.- From Our Correspondent
