Shillong, August 31: In its attempt to bring the government and people nearer through the e-governance, Meghalaya Transport Minister AT Modal launched the “Online Payment of Vehicle Registration Fees, Taxes and Fines” at the IT department Friday.
The online portal will be initially used by the car dealers in Shillong to register new vehicles and also to collect the road tax from the vehicle owners. Many of the Shillong based car dealers were present besides the Chief Secretary WMS Pariat and Transport department principal secretary JP Prakash.
Lauding the transport department officials and the National Informatics Center for putting up the online payment portal for the transport department, Mondal explained how the idea germinated because of the difficulty of collecting registration fees from vehicle owners who were paying in Rs. 1000 and Rs. 500 denomination.
Mondal informed that there were occasion some of the notes turn out to be fake and transport department officials had to pay from their own pocket. He also revealed because of the problems faced by the people in paying their registration fees either because of lack of small denomination notes, middlemen took over and people accused the transport department officials of propping them up for their benefits.
Therefore, in order to do away with all this allegations and make the payment for registration of vehicle and road taxes easier to the people, this online portal was launched. However, this online service will be used only between the transport department and the car dealers in Shillong initially and later might be extended to other districts.
While appreciating the efforts of the transport department and the NIC in conceptualizing and putting together this IT enable services, Chief Secretary WMS Pariat said the online service of the transport department will play a very important role for management of the payment service to the transport department.
Pariat said the launching of this e-service by the transport department is “timely” as it will help improve the efficiency of dealing with public services. – By our Reporter
