The Naga Students’ Union (NSU), Shillong has sought immediate action against those involved in ragging a student at the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) Tura campus.
A memorandum submitted to the NEHU vice chancellor Prof PS Shukla on Wednesday informed that the incident had taken place at Arbella Boys Hostel, Chasingre on October 8, when Thepfürüli Rülu, who is a member of the Union, currently pursuing Agri. Business Management ( 1st Semester) at NEHU, Tura Campus was made a victim of ragging to “which the Union is utterly shocked and saddened by the report of such heinous and undisciplined acts committed towards an innocent and hard working member of our Union.”
Strongly condemning the incident, NSU president Chiran Shimrah said, “(We) would like to urge the authorities to take this case into immediate consideration and to extend the necessary intervention to secure justice. Also the Union would like to humbly request the concerned authority to take legal actions as well by reporting an FIR on the incident.”
“Such an undisciplined and heinous incident has brought a great shame to the students community and should never be encouraged elsewhere,” he said.
Meanwhile, the NSU demanded the university to take necessary actions on the incident within 24 hours.
“Failing to do so, the Union will take the matters into its hand; calling for strikes and boycotts towards the University, moreover will release the heinous incident in the media calling for social justice,” Shimrah said while further demanding that the University should also facilitate the victim students to transfer to another Central University of the same course.
The NSU also demanded NEHU to implement stringent disciplinary actions against the perpetrators, in accordance with the university’s Anti ragging policies and pertinent laws(such as UGC’s Regulations on curbing the menace of Ragging in Higher Educational Institutions,2002) and expulsion of the perpetrators from the University.
