SHILLONG, JULY 5: Hinting that Dr Mukul Sangma will complete his term as chief minister,on Tuesday feigned ignorance about the rift within the Congress over the leadership issue instead blaming the ‘media’ for creating such a perception.
Joshi arrived on his first visit to Meghalaya after he was given charge of Meghalaya as AICC general secretary.
Joshi told reporters after meeting Congress MLAs, MDCs and party workers “This (leadership issue) is a perception created by the media” The common meeting arranged by MPCC saw the attendance of the party MLAs, MDCs, and workers.
However nine legislators did not attend the meeting. Those who did not attend the meeting were KHADC CEM PN Syiem, Government chief whip RV Lyngdoh, Kennedy Khyriem, Ngaitlang Dhar, Winnerson Momin, Clement Marak, Celestine Lyngdoh, Comingone Ymbon and Sports & Youth affairs minister Zenith Sangma.
Its is understood that some Congress dissident MLAs were trying to unseat Mukul Sangma as the chief minister led by Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president DD Lapang earlier on May this year.
The issue reached the AICC leadership but later it died down.
On this, Joshi said, “There is no grumblings. As party leaders they have the right to express their opinions.” He made it clear that his visit to the state was to understand the health of the party and the functioning of the state government.
On the absence of KHADC CEM Pynshngain N Syiem and other MLAsin the meeting, Joshi only said, “I will not be able to know why they have not come. I don’t know whether they have informed the MPCC or the press on this.”
Syiem did not attend the Congress meeting and instead had called a meeting with the land and coal mine owners where he was reportedly busy.
Reacting to a query, Joshi said, “I don’t know what is the urgency of the meeting convened by the KHADC CEM… he is the best person to put this question.”-By Our Reporter
