SHILLONG, JUNE 26: A three-member team from the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Tuesday recorded the statements of the people residing in the sweepers’ colony at Them Iew Mawlong.
Official sources informed that the team had arrived on Monday night in the state capital based on the direction of the NHRC following a complaint lodged by a Delhi-based organization recently. However, the nature of the complaint is yet to be known.
“We have been directed to come here by the Commission. We will be here for three days,” one of the team member told reporters after taking statements of the residents of the sweepers’ colony.
During their visit to the area, women from the Harijan colony were also staging their ongoing peacefull protest against the move of the state government and to relocate the residents from the place.
Earlier, the NHRC team also met officials of the district administration which include magistrates and police.
Sources further informed that the team is also likely to meet the three minors who were assaulted at Them Iew Mawlong on May 31.
They said the team will be submitting a report to the NHRC on its findings.
It may be mentioned here that the assault on the three minor boys by some men in the area caused a volatile situation for five days with unruly mob demanding shifting of settlers from Them ïew Mawlong.
Mob pelted stones at security personnel during the agitation while security forces resorted to firing of tear gas shells to disperse the agitated mob.
A high level committee was immediately constituted to examine all records and documents, and recommend feasible solution on the pending demand to shift settlers from Them Iew Mawlong.
The committee headed by deputy chief minister, Prestone Tynsong was asked to submit its recommendations to the government at the earliest.
