SHILLONG, JULY 22: The three-member committee of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to chalk out an action plan for utilizing Rs 100 crore in Meghalaya.
The Supreme Court in its judgment passed on July 3, had directed the state government to transfer Rs 100 crores from the Meghalaya Environment Protection and Restoration Fund (MEPRF) to the CPCB for restoration of the environment.
After a review meeting held here on Monday, chairman of the committee retired Justice BP Katakey said, “The transfer of Rs 100 crore is under process and we have directed the CPCB to chalk out the action plan on how they are proposing to spend this amount…”
According to him, this amount has to be spent in the state of Meghalaya only, they cannot divert it as per the Supreme Court order.
Meanwhile, the NGT committee has also constituted a sub-committee to be headed by an official from the CPCB to scrutinize all proposals relating to projects for treating acidic rivers and streams in the state.
The sub-committee will also comprises of representatives from the state pollution control board, mining & geology, forest and regional office of the Ministry of Environment & Forests.
Katakey said a presentation was made by one firm on a pilot project for treating acidic water in the streams by algae treatment. “They have submitted their project report. Based on the recommendation to be made by the sub-committee the central pollution control board will take a decision,” he informed.
