Shillong, October 29: Even as the thirteen pro Inner Line Permit (ILP) ngos have urged politicians and ministers to rise above party affiliation and take the “influx issue” seriously, it also said that they are demanding an ILP that will fit into the modern set-up of the state. KSU vice president Frederick Kharmawphlang also said that the ngos are demanding that is within the purview of the Indian constitution.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Kharmawphlang said that the ngos are not insisting on a law which was formulated in 1873, but an ILP that will fit in modern society.
Quoting chief minister Mukul Sangma that the ILP has failed to curb illegal migration in the other states of the region, Kharmawphlang said that the Meghalaya government should not be adamant but implement an ILP which is suitable for the state.
Kharmawphlang statement said, “What we want to point out is that if that form of ILP has not worked a relaxed form of ILP for our state will be effective in curbing influx.”
The KSU leader also said that the ngos were forced to agitate after the state government failed to implement the ILP as desired by them. He said, “We had hoped that the state government would implement ILP but what they did was opposite of what we had expected by rejecting our demands.”
Kharmawphlang also condemned the act of hunting, arresting and charging with criminal offences against the pro-ILP activists by the police.-By Our Reporter
