NONGPOH, JAN 9: In normal circumstance there would not be a murmur if a district police head is transfer, and rarely would non-governmental organizations (ngos) raise a voice of protest over the transfer of the district police super. However, in a very rare instance three prominent pressure groups of the Ri-Bhoi district of Meghalaya have opposed the transfer of Ri-Bhoi district Superintendent of Police Claudia Lyngwa, who has earned herself a sobriquet of being a tough, no nonsense cop in the state.
The Ri-Bhoi unit of the Khasi Students Union (KSU), Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo people (FKJGP) and the Ri-Bhoi Youth Federation (RBYF) have on Wenesday come out strongly against the transfer of Lyngwa out of the district.
The three organizations smells the hand of some politicians, who do not see eye to eye with Lyngwa, as they do not want her as the district police chief with Meghalaya assembly elections some few weeks away.
The three ngos have threatened to agitate if Lyngwa was transferred out of the Ri-Bhoi district. FKJGP leaders Eddie G Kharbanai (FKJGP), RBYF LK Sawkmie and KSU F Kharkamni told this reporter Wednesday they would not allow the government to transfer Claudia Lyngwa as and threatened to agitate.
All the three leaders said, “Lyngwa transfer is political as some politicians wants an SP who is will curry favour for them during the elections.”
The leaders of the three ngos wondered how can Lyngwa be transferred out of the district as she has completed just one and half year of the mandatory three years.
The leaders were all praised for Lyngwa for her commendable job in the district and said she is the only SP who is close with the public, but at the same time anti social elements are scared of her. They felt she is the only police officer who can eradicate anti- social elements from the district.
The ngo leaders revealed that they have urged the state government to cancel the transfer order and retain Claudia as the SPof the district and not post other non-tribal police officer in her place. –By Our Reporter
