SHILLONG, APR 13: Thirteen pro Inner Line Permit (ILP) ngos demanding its implementation in the state has asked the state government to convene a meeting to further discuss the influx issue.

“The state government should not delay any more but convene the meeting with ngos to discuss on the influx issue,” Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) president Joe Marwein said.

Marwein informed that the ngos had sought an appointment with the state government for the last three weeks but it is yet to get it’s response. He said, “We will soon submit a reminder to the state government on the matter.”

The ngos had earlier said they would put up before the state government on the proposed points needed to be incorporated in the exiting Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation Act, 1873 and demand the immediate release of its members booked under the Meghalaya Prevention Detention Act (MDPA) in their next round of meeting .

According to the ngo, the points that they will be proposing will ensure that Meghalaya has a strong and effective ILP to check and prevent influx into the state and protect the identity of the indigenous tribal and their lands.

The ngos have also claimed that the proposed points are aimed at bringing a comprehensive mechanism within the ILP and at the same time will suit the local condition.

The ngos  have discarded the 52 existing laws offered by the state government as alternative to the ILP saying they are not “effective” to tackle influx.

The ngos had suspended their agitation after their meeting with the government on January 15 and the latter had asked the ngos to study existing laws to tackle influx and make up their mind.

Around 71 ngos members were arrested during the four months long agitations demanding the implementation of the ILP last year.

A total of 86 criminal cases were registered against them which included arson, murder, attempt to murder and other violent acts. These cases are under trial by the special court constituted by the state government.- By Our Reporter
