SHILLONG, MAY 3: Shooting Association of Meghalaya (SAM) has requested the state government to explore the possibility to setting up an Open and Indoor Shooting Ranges in Meghalaya. The request was made through a letter written by SAM to the Meghalaya sports minister Zenith Sangma on Friday. As part of its effort to promote shooting sports in Meghalaya, the Shooting Association of Meghalaya (SAM) was formed and registered under the Societies Registration Act XII of 1983, on 18th July 2012 in Shillong in the presence of the observer from the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI)
SAM president John F Kharshiing however said the need for such a venue was felt as efforts are being made to promote shooting sport in Meghalaya considering that a medal was won in this category.
The SAM has recently been accorded affiliation by the National Rifles Association of India (NRAI).
SAM was part of the 1st North East Shooting Championship held at Aizawl from the 18th to 23rd March 2013, where Meghalaya participated in two categories.
The .22 standard pistol 25 meter and, 10 meter .177 air pistol category. It managed to bag the silver medal in the .177 with a score of 365 missing the gold in the 2 points. A total of 198 Shooters participated in the NE Championship.
A delegation from the NRAI and SAM has also called on union minister of youth affair & sports Jitendra Singh and brief him on the lack of shooting sport infrastructure in Meghalaya. The minister assured the delegation that he would examine and see if the SAI complex at NEHU, Shillong could be upgraded to accommodate shooting ranges.- By Our Reporter
