SHILLONG, FEB 12: The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) released its election manifesto for the Meghalaya Assembly election scheduled for February 23, promising a “stable-government” if it is voted to power besides safeguarding the environment and ensuring 10 per cent reservation in central government jobs for the North East.
The manifesto which is translated in Khasi, Garo and English was released by the party’s chief, Sanbor Shullai in the presence of party workers and supporters besides candidates here in the city.
“The NCP is committed to provide a stable-government and strong leadership, which is the need of the hour besides standing for change and intend to do thing differently keeping up with the times and needs of the community in this globalized world economy,” Shullai said while releasing the manifesto.
The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has also pledged to “manage politics” to fulfill the aspirations of the people through its 21-point manifesto released Tuesday.
“We are a party comprising of young think-tanks who are here not to do politics but to manage politics,” NCP general secretary Constantine N Thma told reporters.
NCP president Sanbor Shullai said that all parties will come up with manifestoes with a promise to fulfill the issues listed in their manifesto. However, he said, “Most are just lip services. On our part we will try our best to fulfill the promises made in the manifesto.”
Elaborating more on the manifesto, NCP state general secretary, Constantine N Thma said, “The party is strongly against corruption and if it is voted to power will set up an independent vigilance commission to monitor the implementation of government funded projects.”
Thma appealed to electorates to vote for the party for a people-centric , delivery-ensured and corruption-free stable government.
Thma said, “The party will also work out guidelines for fund utilization of the MLA local development scheme with special emphasis to underdeveloped areas to ensure transparency and community participation.”
Highlighting on the other top priorities that the party would take up, Thma said, “The NCP pledge to protect the environment by introducing scientific coal mining in the state,” adding “The present system of coal mining has badly affected the environment.”
The NCP has also pledged to move for a 10 per cent reservation in central government jobs for the people not only in Meghalaya but the entire north east to generate employment opportunities.
“We will be concentrating more on creating self-employment opportunities for the people,” Thma added.
The party manifesto also highlighted on the need to create a separate ministry to look after the traditional institution and to introduce a law in the legislative assembly to create a mechanism to enable direct funding to the traditional institutions in the state.
The manifesto further spell out the party’s policy to introduce a social security scheme for the teaching community, address power problem, better road and air connectivity and including promoting tourism industry in the state.
The NCP has fielded twenty-one candidates in the 60-member Meghalaya assembly for the upcoming polls.- By Our Reporter
