SHILLONG, MAR 28: MDC from Rambrai-Jyrngam Bajop Pyngrope on Monday said the infighting between the former Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Mukul Sangma and MPCC chief Vincent H Pala has destroyed the Congress in Meghalaya.
According to him, the decision to suspend the five legislators has led to the further downfall of the Congress party in the state.
Speaking to reporters after tendering his resignation from the Congress, Pyngrope said maximum of the MLAs and MDCs had in writing recommended the name of Charles Pyngrope to be the president of the MPCC but unfortunately, AICC appointed the Lok Sabha MP Vincent H Pala.
“But we tried to stick with the party and the 12 MLAs also did not leave the party. However, the CLP leader (Mukul Sangma) had his own way of taking decisions. It was the infighting between the CLP leader and the MPCC president that has destroyed the party with the exodus of 12 MLAs,” he said.
Pyngrope said despite this, the Congress was however still strong as the five MLAs remained intact until they were suspended just because they supported the NPP-led state government.
“The decision to suspend the five MLAs has led to the downfall of the Congress party. It is their right to support the government but suspending them was a very bad idea,” he stated.
He further alleged that no one has seen the suspension order which was issued by the AICC as claimed by the MPCC.
“Where is that suspension order (but the fact is) it is only the order from the MPCC,” Pyngrope said. He also referred to the Congress as someone who ignores the birds that are already in the cage while trying to get hold of those which are flying in the sky.
On the fate of the Congress in 2023, Pyngrope said they will try to search for ex-MLAs and ex-leaders to contest from the party.
“Before, the Congress ticket was in high demand but nowadays, the party has to search for candidates. That is the state of the Congress as of today,” he added.
