SHILLONG, JUN 11: National People’s Party (NPP) leader and deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong has accused the former chief minister Mukul Sangma of having “converted” the then Congress-led Meghalaya United Alliance (MUA) government into a company.
“Mukul has converted the state government as a company which if he wishes it can be done and if doesn’t wishes it will not be done,” Tynsong told reporters here on Monday.
His statement came following reports suggesting that a senior Congress leader and former PWD minister Martin M Danggo is likely to switch over to the ruling NPP if the present government agrees to upgrade Ranikor administrative unit into civil sub-division.
Citing an instance, Tynsong said, “Danggo kept on requesting for a civil sub-division which not only me but all MLAs feel it was justified and necessary but Mukul fails to do that or say anything on that.”
“Instead he (Mukul) gives only the Ranikor administrative unit which I feel it is just as good as saying no,” he added.
The deputy chief minister further informed that he would be accompanying the chief minister Conrad K Sangma to Ranikor on Tuesday.
The other cabinet ministers who will be visiting the area also include home minister James K Sangma, C&RD minister Sniawbhalang Dhar and MLAs of the ruling alliance.
Refusing to comment on whether any announcement would be made during the meeting at Ranikor, Tynsong however said, “We are goingtomorrow to see the area and talk with the people based on which will take a call (on the matter).”
On the other hand, the deputy chief minister pointed out that 75 percent of Ranikor is inaccessible and it is the duty of the state government to make sure that it goes closer to the people.
Asked whether Danggo, a five-time MLA of Ranikor would be joining the NPP, Tynsong, while avoiding giving a direct reply only said, “If he (Danggo) We would love any leader from any constituency to join us. Our door is always open 24X7 even to Mukul Sangma if he wishes.”
“However, I used to tell him (Danggo) why don’t you come and join the NPP but his response was only with a smiling face,” he said. He however denied that more MLAs are contemplating to join the NPP.
Reacting to another query, Tynsong, who is also a former Congress leader, said that his only opposition and reservation when he left the Congress was the leadership under Mukul Sangma.
“I don’t like his (Mukul) leadership I have been with him since 2003 till I resigned on December 29, last year and till today I know him very well,” he said.
The senior NPP leader further blamed Mukul for the Congress being out of power in the state. “Why Congress is out is of Mukul. Single handedly he has failed (the party). I don’t blame others but I blame Mukul Sangma,” he said.
