SHILLONG, DEC 30: Cabinet minister in-charge PHE Celestine Lyngdoh today was appointed as the new Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) chief replacing Congress veteran leader and former chief minister DD Lapang ahead of the crucial Assembly elections to be held early next year.
In a major reshuffling, Member of Parliament from Shillong constituency Vincent H Pala was also appointed as the new working president of the state Pradesh Congress Committee, the post which was earlier held by James S Lyngdoh.
In a statement issued on Saturday, All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Janardan Dwivedi (MP) informed that the Congress national chief Rahul Gandhi has appointed the PCC president and one working president of the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee.
“Dr Celestine Lyngdoh has been appointed as PCC president and Vincent H Pala as PCC working president,” Dwivedi said.
He further informed that the Congress national president has appointed DD Lapang, the outgoing president of the PCC, as adviser of the Pradesh Congress Committee.
It may be mentioned here, Lapang, a five-time former chief minister and longest serving legislator of Nongpoh constituency has also decided not to contest in the upcoming 2018 Assembly polls.
Meanwhile, the AICC has also approved the names of members of the Pradesh Election Committee (PEC).
The PEC to be headed by Celestine Lyngdoh as president also include chief minister Mukul Sangma,
MP Vincent H Pala, James S Lyngdoh, DD Lapang, Debora C Marak (minister), MM Danggo (minister), RC Laloo (deputy chief minister), Kennedy C Khyriem (MLA), Cherak W Momin (MLA), Charles Pyngrope (former MLA), RV Lyngdoh (minister) and Joplin Scott Shylla (Mahila president).
